A seafaring Scandinavian people who plundered the coasts of northern and western Europe between the 8th and 10th century. There is some speculation that the vikings were the first Europeans discover the new world of North America. There is some highly disputed evidence of a Viking presence in Iowa. (vol. 3#5:12-13)
