ELM SPRINGS MAN REMOVES CATTLE WARTS BY MAGIC

submitted by Todd Ristau

Sioux: "My experience with it was direct," said Clifford Leger of Elm Springs, "I had a heifer that had warts---six or eight inches wide, some in clumps---all around its neck. Nothin' me or the vets could come up with would cure 'em." The condition persisted until a strange and drunken individual arrived in a dilapidated Ford.

"This drunk was my Dad's cousin, Johnny Bruisencarrie. He saw the cow with the warts, and said he'd take care of it for me. The man started waving his arms in big circles 'til he got the Heifer's attention. He kept makin' smaller and smaller circles 'til he couldn't no more. An' then he whispered to the cow, "Your name is Philey." He told me in three days the warts would fall off. They did; exactly 72 hours later---to the minute. I was so surprised, I picked 'em all up and put'em in pickle jars full of alcohol."

Leger's unusual collection is on display at the B. Lavatsky Museum as part of this summer's "Animal Oddities and Folk Remedies" exhibit. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
