MUSCATINE: Startled Ice fisherman Bob Johnston of Montpellier pulled a fish from the frigid waters of the Mississippi river last month only to notice that his catch had the sex organs of both a male and a female of the species!
One out of every three fish caught that day seemed to display similar hermaphroditic tendencies.

| Officials claim that there is nothing to be alarmed about, but local environmental advocates are saying the mutations are occurring because of the number of pollutants being discharged into the water in the highly industrialized area. This incident is not isolated, similar finds of mutated fish were reported in Florida this month, and discharge from a paper mill there seems to be the reason. Why is our state so reluctant to address the very real environmental impact of the corporations it solicits with hefty tax subsidies? Is this why we give our money to the State?
