Rock Quarry Quarantined

Lucas: Federal Agents have cordoned off the abandoned rock quarry just southwest of Irish Grove, raising speculation and apprehension among area residents.

Beth and Romy Prediger, aged 18 and 20, made the discovery. The two often went to the quarry to hike and hunt fossils, as it is only a few blocks from their house. On the afternoon of September 15, they had just taken taken a path into the woods leading to the quarry, when a man appeared suddenly and stopped them. According to Romy, it was if the man had appeared out of thin air.

"He was scary," she says, eyes wide. "He was real tall and looked kind of like a vampire. He had sunglasses on and I don't know why because it wasn't dark."

     Beth adds, "He stunk, too."

"Yeah," continues Romy. "He showed us some card. I don't know what it said because he didn't give us time to look too closely. It said he was from some government agency and the government was doing stuff in the quarry. He said we couldn't go in there anymore."

"I asked 'What are you doing?'" pipes in Beth. "He said it was secret but it wouldn't take very long. He was so weird, so we got out of there."

The two women told their parents about the incident, who then called the police for an explanation. Unsurprisingly, the police had no idea what was going on in the quarry. Officers Evan Singer and Patricia Keene weare sent to investigate. Apparently, they encountered a similar man dressed all in black and carrying government identification, identifying him as some branch of the FBI. Both officers could hear more voices further up the path, but could not see the quarry from their vantage point. The man refused to give any more details, including his name, and told the officers that the area around the quarry was quarantined until they finished their investigation. He assured them that the community was in no danger, and urged them and others to help by complying with the quarantine.

So far, the town has complied. But one may wonder whether the quarantine of the quarry has anything to do with the pond that gave resident Sam Gunderson two separate neural structures in April of this year (see: The Man With Two Brains, April, 1997, vol. 4, Issue #5). If so, the people of Irish Grove, not to mention Sam Gunderson, deserve some answers.
