IOWA'S SENSUOUS CZECH VISIONARY,
SISTER KASI

Dear Kasi,

I'm making a quilt for my daughter-in-law. She is not particularly interested in matters of occult significance, but I have been quite avid in my interest for years. I wonder if you could tell me a little about colors and their relevance to magical values so that I can make my fabric choices more wisely.

     Quilting Bee in Little Amana

     Dear Bee,

You are quite right about the symbolic power of color. The values and significance vary between cultures, but red is probably reckoned as the most universally powerful and auspicious color. I'm sure that this is due to its obvious connection to the color of blood. It is immediately identified with the human life force. It is sometimes, as in China, used to symbolize protection and is anti-demonic, but many western cultures use it to work evil and destructive spells. Red Flannel is considered an important ingredient in such voodoo spells. Be careful there! The Buddhists consider this combination of colors highly protective when worn together, and should look wonderful in a patterned quilt: yellow, white, red, dark blue, and black. As for the subject of patterns, the circle is a universal magical symbol suggesting infinity and has the power to banish evil. The cross is a protection symbol for many cultures, even non-Christian. The triangle is difficult, because the upward pointing is good, and the downward pointing is not.....tell your daughter-in-law to be careful to always put the quilt on so that good comes from getting under it.

     Dear Sister,

I just bought a house and want to protect it, what can I do?

     North Liberty Home Owner

     Dear Home Owner,

To protect the house from evil and sorcery, you have no doubt heard of hanging a horse shoe over the door way with the open end up. This actually is a very potent charm, but most people neglect the most important step. The horseshoe must be heated until red hot, and while still glowing be nailed above the doorway. Once fastened there, it must never be removed or the evil spirits will flood the edifice and will be very difficult to expel. If you are having trouble with succubi or incubi, or bad dreams, you may repeat the horseshoe process using the headboard of your bed instead of the doorway to your home.

     Dear Venerated Mistress,

What is the "Hand of Glory"?

     Curious in Clinton

     Dear Curious,

"The Hand of Glory" is very potent magical item. It is made of the right hand of a murderer severed during the eclipse of the moon, and dried and preserved. It is used in spells, especially those of black magik. If a candle is placed in the hand, only the person carrying the hand can see its flame or the illumination it casts. Carried into a house at night it allows you too be unseen, to see with ease, and also causes the inhabitants to keep from waking while the flame burns.
